Minas Gerais

Minas Gerais, located in the southeastern region of Brazil, is the third-most populous region, with approximately 21 million residents. Minas Gerais has the highest number of cities among Brazilian states, with 853 municipalities, reflecting a rich diversity in culture, size, population, and regional characteristics.
Often referred to as the “heart of Brazil,” the state is known for its cultural richness, historical significance, natural beauty, and celebrated cuisine. Minas Gerais’s capital, Belo Horizonte, is Brazil’s sixth-largest city, with around 2.5 million residents. It is equally renowned for its historic colonial towns, such as Ouro Preto, Tiradentes, Mariana, Diamantina, and São João del Rei. These cities, established during the gold rush of the 18th century, preserve Brazil’s colonial architecture and cultural heritage, making Minas Gerais a hub of historical and natural treasures in the country.
