Stefan Schulz studied Chemistry at the University of Hamburg, Germany, and earned his PhD there in 1987, working with Prof. Wittko Francke. After a postdoc with Prof. Jerry Meinwald at Cornell University, working on pheromone alkaloid biosynthesis, he started his independent research in 1989 at Hamburg, focusing on arthropod signals and lipids, especially spiders. In 1997, he moved to TU Braunschweig, where he holds a chair in Organic Chemistry. His research group focuses on Chemical Ecology and Natural Products from arthropods, vertebrates, plants, and microorganisms, trying to combine organic analytics, total synthesis, and functions of signaling compounds, lipids, and chemical defense.
