Mercedes M. da Cunha Bustamante
Full Professor at the University of Brasília with expertise in Ecology, particularly Ecosystem Ecology, focusing on the following topics: Cerrado, land-use changes, biogeochemistry, and global environmental changes. Author of the chapter “Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Uses” in the 5th and 6th Assessment Reports of Working Group 3 (Mitigation) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Co-coordinator of the “Mitigation” Working Group of the Brazilian Panel on Climate Change, responsible for preparing the technical report on Climate Change Mitigation in Brazil (2011–2014). Co-coordinator of the chapter “Drivers of Changes” for the Regional Assessment for the Americas of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Served as General Coordinator of Ecosystem Management (2011–2012) and Director of Policies and Thematic Programs at the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (2012–2013), Director of National Programs and Scholarships (2016), and President of CAPES (2023). Elected Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, The World Academy of Sciences, and the United States National Academy of Sciences. Recipient of the National Order of Scientific Merit in 2018.
