Historical Retrospective of the Brazilian Conference on Natural Products (BCNP).
The first Brazilian Conference on Natural Products (BCNP), organized by the Division of Natural Products of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ), was held in 2007 alongside the XXVII Meeting on Micromolecular Evolution, Systematics, and Ecology (RESEM). The first edition of RESEM (Meeting on Micromolecular Evolution, Systematics, and Ecology) was held in São Paulo in 1978 and continued to take place across various states of Brazil for 26 years. In 2007, during the XXVII RESEM, the event merged with the newly created Brazilian Conference on Natural Products (BCNP) under the leadership of the Natural Products Division of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). Since then, BCNP and RESEM have been held together, and future editions will continue under the combined title BCNP/RESEM.
The inaugural BCNP drew approximately 400 participants from Brazil, Latin America, Europe, and the United States. The event’s success, marked by the high number of attendees and the quality of the presentations, firmly established it as a national and international scientific reference.
In 2011, the 3rd BCNP/XXIX RESEM was held in Ouro Preto, followed by the 4th BCNP/XXX RESEM in Natal in 2013, which gathered around 700 participants. The 5th BCNP/XXXI RESEM took place in Campinas in 2015, attracting 500 participants and over 20 international speakers. The 2017 edition (6th BCNP/XXXII RESEM in Vitória) and 2019 (7th BCNP/XXXIII RESEM in Rio de Janeiro) also saw around 700 participants, further strengthening collaborations between researchers from Brazil, Latin America, the U.S., Asia, and Europe.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 8th BCNP/XXXIV RESEM was held virtually in 2021. In 2023, the 9th BCNP/XXXV RESEM returned as an in-person event in Salvador, drawing 500 participants, including keynote speakers from seven countries, such as Argentina, Austria, the U.S., Greece, Paraguay, and Poland.
A significant aspect of every BCNP/RESEM has been the active participation of undergraduate and graduate students. Their interactions with international researchers have contributed significantly to advancing the research programs of graduate studies in Brazil. The event keeps the scientific community updated on cutting-edge topics in natural products, playing a crucial role in human resource training, especially for students who face challenges attending conferences in Europe and the U.S.
Since 2007, the BCNP/RESEM has evolved into a key international forum, bringing together researchers, students, and professionals from across the globe. It is a crucial platform for sharing the latest developments, fostering discussions, and promoting collaborations in natural products research.
We are curating a diverse program for this year’s edition, featuring keynote lectures, round tables, poster sessions, flash poster presentations, and ample networking opportunities. These activities aim to foster productive interactions among participants, providing valuable insights and opportunities for collaboration. The conference continues to be a premier venue for knowledge exchange and experience sharing, offering participants—along with our sponsors—numerous benefits.
Over the years, BCNP/RESEM has solidified its reputation as an essential platform for driving scientific and technological advancements in natural products research in Brazil and internationally.
