Prof. Berlinck graduated in Chemistry at the University of Campinas (1987) and obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (1992). He joined the Universidade de São Paulo in 1993 as an assistant professor and was a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia (1997-1998). His research focuses on the discovery of pharmacologically active compounds from marine invertebrates and microbial secondary metabolism. In 1998, he initiated Brazil’s first program investigating microbial secondary metabolites. He collaborated with the National Cooperative Drug Discovery Group (2001-2006) led by Prof. Chris Ireland. His work spans cancer, inflammation, antibiotics, parasitic diseases, organic synthesis, and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Currently, he studies the biochemical pathways of fungi and bacteria in culture conditions.
